Newly recruited family physician Dr. Henelle Swart is now working in Sylvan Lake.

Swart will be providing care to residents in and around the Sylvan Lake area at the Sylvan Medical Centre and the Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (SLAACS).

With Dr. Swart’s arrival, there are now 18 practicing physicians in Sylvan Lake.

Prior to coming to Sylvan Lake, Dr. Swart practiced as a family physician in South Africa, where she worked in the emergency department and with dialysis patients.

Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors and MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake Devin Dreeshen said he’s happy the town has added another physician.

“We are thrilled to welcome her to Sylvan Lake, where I am certain her knowledge and skills will be much appreciated.”

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is continuing to recruit physicians to come work across its Central Zone to meet community needs.

To do this AHS has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities.

Community partners and organizations, such as local Health Advisory Councils, the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees work closely with the AHS physician resource planners as well.

AHS is the provincial health authority responsible for the planning and delivery of health support and services for the residents who live in Alberta.

AHS’s mission is to provide a patient-focused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.

Current things AHS is focusing on include:

- reducing emergency department wait times

- improving EMS response times

- increasing access to surgeries

- improving patient flow
