'Beach Reads' for the summer

A 'beach read' is a book that is usually fictional that one might enjoy during a vacation or a day at the beach

With summer and tourist season now upon us there are many ways to take in the lovely outdoor weather.

One of the ways that I like to is by heading down to the pier and reading a book.

More often than not I like to pick up something that many people would refer to as a 'beach read,' which is a book that is usually fictional that one might enjoy during a vacation or a day at the beach.

So if you find yourself to be more of a person who also just likes to enjoy a good book while also enjoying the weather and the atmosphere of being by the lake I have some recommendations:

- People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry.

While this author literally has a book called Beach Read, I decided to bring up this one because as you may infer by the title it deals with going on vacation. Specifically, this book follows two best friends who are polar opposites who met in college Poppy and Alex. This book is such a quick, funny, romantic read which I found difficult to put down.

"On vacation, you can be anyone you want. Like a good book or an incredible outfit, being on vacation transports you into another version of yourself."

- The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.

This young adult book which takes place in the modern world combined with some fantastical aspects brings Greek mythology to life in a contemporary setting.

I personally really love this book. It is one that I first read a couple of years after it originally came out in 2010 and is honestly such a comfort read.

While this book also features younger characters, I find that it is a good book that anyone at any age can enjoy.

"If my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself."

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery.

This book is yet again another comfort read of mine.

Following young orphan girl Anne Shirley, this book tells her story of living with the Cuthberts on Prince Edward Island in the small fictional town of Avonlea. I adore this book and series so much. In fact, this book is what inspired me and made me dream of going to University/College in P.E.I., which I did.

"It's been my experience that you can nearly always enjoy things if you make up your mind firmly that you will."

Circe by Madeline Miller.

This book tells the tale of Circe, a Greek mythological character who was the daughter of Helios.

In this book, Miller tells her story and it is incredible. Circe's journey is one that I was so intrigued by and in my opinion she is such a feminist character. Literally from the first sentence of this book I was hooked and it is one that I would gladly reread over again.

"He showed me his scars, and in return he let me pretend that I had none."

The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston.

This book follows Clementine, who after her aunt passes away inherits her apartment which her aunt had always told her was a place where moments blended together like watercolours and were a pinch in time.

I am just going to say this, if you like the movie The Lake House with Keanu Reeves, you are probably going to love this.

Full of twists and turns this book is one of my absolute favourites that I have read so far this year. Be forewarned though if you pick up this one I do recommend having a tissue box nearby.

"You only live once. And if you do it right, once is all you need."

If you are interested in reading any of the books I mentioned on this list they are all available to check out from the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library or purchase wherever books are sold.
